Does LISTERINE® Work? A Study of Efficacy
Objective
Determine the efficacy of a mouthrinse used as a supplement to regular oral hygiene measures on supragingival dental plaque and gingivitis (N=107).
Methodology
Double-blind, controlled clinical study of healthy male and female subjects (aged 18-60 years) with preexisting plaque and gingivitis but without evidence of periodontitis.
Results
LISTERINE® inhibited the accumulation of supragingival dental plaque by 34.4% (P<0.001) and the development of gingivitis by 33.7% (P<0.001) at 6 months compared to hydroalcohol control.
Conclusion
When used as a supplement to normal oral hygiene following a prophylaxis, LISTERINE® significantly reduced plaque and gingivitis over a 6-month period, without an increase in extrinsic tooth stain.
*LISTERINE® is not indicated for use in the treatment of xerostomia.
Subjects followed their usual oral hygiene and dietary habits.
